Overcoming Loss, Building Legacy, and the Power of Partnership with George R. Dovolis

I'm George R. Dovolis. I've been an entrepreneur for over 40 years, married to my beautiful wife Holly for 35 years, and we have two amazing daughters. I started my first business at 20 owning one of the largest upholstery shops at the Design Center in Palm Desert, California, working with high-end interior designers and wealthy clientele before relocating to Colorado to raise my family.

Throughout my career, I've transitioned through several industries. I spent years in financial planning helping families protect their wealth, built a massive real estate investment portfolio, and eventually stepped into executive consulting.

Today, through our movement Together We Are Stronger, my family and I share the hard-earned lessons from four decades of business operations so other business owners, leaders, and couples don't feel like they're isolated on an island by themselves.

In 2011, everything collapsed. I discovered a partner I trusted was fraudulently selling the same real estate properties to multiple buyers, taking $120,000 cash on single properties from ten different investors simultaneously. Overnight, the legal, financial, and reputational fallout landed directly on my shoulders.

We lost $2 million in pure cash, our liquid assets, and the home I had purchased for my wife and daughters. Going from peak financial freedom to having your bank accounts wiped out while trying to protect your family is a mental strain most people never recover from.

You don't recover overnight. But I anchored myself to a singular truth, I still had my faith, I still had my integrity, and I still had my family. I refused to sit in a room asking "why me?" Even when the debt and pressure felt suffocating, I got up every morning with a purpose to rebuild step by step.

Holly was the ultimate anchor. When we sat down at our kitchen table after realizing we had lost millions and were losing our home, she didn't yell, she didn't point fingers, and she didn't dwell on what was gone. She looked me in the eyes and asked, "What are we going to do about it?"

When an entrepreneur goes through severe loss, depression sets in fast. You feel like a failure as a provider. In my darkest moments, Holly lifted me up. She prayed with me, kept our family unified, and reminded me of who I was when I couldn't see it myself.

Having a spouse who stands beside you as a true partner gives you the leverage to overcome depression, refine your vetting process for future business dealings, and become a stronger father, leader, and businessman.

Pain gives you perspective, and perspective gives you a duty to serve. We created Together We Are Stronger and Leadership Straight No Chaser to give leaders an unfiltered look at what building and sustaining a business actually takes.

Holly and I are currently co-authoring a book documenting our story, and we are rolling out joint coaching programs tailored for entrepreneurial couples and high-level executives.

By combining my 40 years of front-line entrepreneurship with Holly's 30 years in corporate leadership, we provide practical, battle-tested solutions. We don't coach from textbook theory, we guide people from real-world scar tissue because we know what it's like to fight your way out of the trenches.

Professionalism is entirely about authentic relationship building and service. It is never about walking into a room asking, "What can I extract from this person?" It's about asking, "How can I solve a problem for them, add value to their operation, and help them scale?"

When you focus on genuine partnerships, operate with high integrity, and deliver on your word every single time, long-term commercial success becomes a natural byproduct. Transactional operators fail eventually, relationship builders endure forever.

In my early twenties in Palm Desert, I sat at a coffee table every Tuesday morning with a group of self-made multimillionaires and billionaires. They were willing to open up their playbooks to me. But because of my own emotional baggage, I viewed them through the lens of father figures rather than business mentors.

I put up emotional walls, let pride get in the way, and didn't allow myself to absorb their strategic business wisdom.

My advice to any rising entrepreneur is simple: drop your ego at the door. When you are in the presence of leaders who have built the mountain you want to climb, lower your guard, listen intently, and accept their mentorship for what it is without letting personal insecurities block your growth.

No matter how severe the storm is, you are never defeated unless you quit. Money can be lost and rebuilt, properties come and go, but your character, your faith, and your commitment to the people you love are bulletproof if you choose to guard them. Build strong partnerships, surround yourself with people who keep you grounded, and remember that together we are always stronger.
